Mitchell 'pleased' as FG exonerates her of wrong-doing after Mahon report

Fine Gael TD Olivia Mitchell has welcomed the findings of a party disciplinary committee which exonerated her after criticism in the Mahon Tribunal report of an "inappropriate" £500 donation she received from lobbyist Frank Dunlop.

Fine Gael TD Olivia Mitchell has welcomed the findings of a party disciplinary committee which exonerated her after criticism in the Mahon Tribunal report of an "inappropriate" £500 donation she received from lobbyist Frank Dunlop.

Another Fine Gael member, Councillor Therese Ridge, has had the whip removed from her.

There had been reports that Olivia Mitchell would have resigned her Dáil seat if the party took disciplinary action against her arising out of the Mahon Tribunal report.

Frank Dunlop made the £500 payment to Ms Mitchell at the time of the 1992 General Election.

The Fine Gael committee last night exonerated the Deputy Mitchell and said she remained a member in "high standing".

Olivia Mitchell said she was pleased but not surprised with the finding.

The same committee took a different view of Cllr Therese Ridge who was also criticised in the Mahon Report.

The party found her relationship with Frank Dunlop compromised her role as a public representative, and the whip has been removed from her.
