Ministers talk 'recovery' ahead of Budget

The Minister for Communications and Energy Alex White has said that tomorrow's Budget is the "first of the recovery".

The Government is widely expected to announce a cut in income tax, changes to the Universal Social Charge and tax relief on water charges.

Speaking in Co Offaly, Minister White says it is important not to jeopardise economic progress.

“I think it is the case that this will be the first Budget of the recovery, and we do have a recovery in our country,” he said.

“It’s slow and it’s tentative and I wouldn’t make huge claims for it, but it’s definitely a recovery.

“We want to make sure that we don’t do anything that would endanger that, but we also want to have regard for the fact that people have suffered enormously in the past six years.”

Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe' said that tomorrow's Budget will give something back in the years ahead to those who have suffered.

Minister Donohoe refused to confirm any of the speculation on will be announced tomorrow.

Speaking in Dublin, he insisted the Government will be prudent, not jeopardise the recovery, but will give something back.

“Everybody’s eager to know will their be further difficulty, will their be relief included in the Budget tomorrow,” he said.

“The two objectives will be … what we can do to maintain and create more jobs, and secondly to make sure that everything we do builds on the recovery that’s underway in our national finances.

“People have had such a hard time of it now over the last number of years and we want to ensure that there is a dividend for those sacrifices now in the years to come.”
