A report outlining proposals for major changes to the college entry system is expected to be given to the Education Minister Ruairi Quinn today.
It has been compiled by the country's seven university presidents.
Minister Quinn asked the university heads to begin work on this report last September.
It has been reported that the finished research includes suggestions that subjects be ranked according to difficulty, and bonus points be introduced for a wider range of subjects.
Today's report is said to contain options which will then be put to a taskforce for fine tuning later this year.
It comes a day after the release of this year's first round of CAO offers, and the confirmation by Trinity College Dublin that it is considering ways to assess student ability on more than just point scoring for its law courses.
