Minister for Science Conor Lenihan has today said he is open to the concept of some form of National Government.

Minister Lenihan's comments echo those of his brother, Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan, who has called for an all-party "united national effort" to halt the country's financial collapse.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen has said its up to the Opposition parties to put forward Budget suggestions if they wish to do so, and the Government would then consider them.

"I have no problem with the concept of a national (Government)," said Minister Lenihan.

"So that would naturally mean the dissolution of this Government and the formation of a new Government. That could happen before the election or after the election."
