Minister Gormley to propose new waste levies

New levies for landfill and incineration are being proposed by Environment Minister John Gormley today.

New levies for landfill and incineration are being proposed by Environment Minister John Gormley today.

As part of a new consultation process on a Draft Waste Policy, Minister Gormley is seeking to increase the existing levy on landfill and introduce a new one for incinerators.

He is also proposing that the new regulations which would see the introduction of food waste, or 'brown bin', collections for all households by January 2012.

The Minister says that a move towards Mechanical Biological Treatment waste disposal is much more environmentally friendly than incineration.
