Minister expresses concern for future of 1,000 Aviva jobs

05/10/2011 - 12:58:04
Jobs Minister Richard Bruton has today expressed concern at reports that Aviva may be planning to shed up to 1,000 jobs.

The insurance company is currently carrying out a review of its Irish operations as part of a restructuring and cost-cutting programme.

"Of course it’s a concern and I feel for the workers who are directly involved by the uncertainty created by this review," said Minister Bruton.

"I know it’s going on for some months and it has still a number of weeks to go.

"I’ve been in touch with the company, I’ve offered the support of our own agencies and I will continue to keep in touch with the company.

"It is a worrying time."

Aviva employs around 2,000 people in Ireland, at locations in Dublin, Cork and Galway.

Officials from the Unite trade union, which represents 1,300 of the workers, are to meeting senior management this afternoon to discuss the company's plans.
