Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald has today defended Josephine Feehily’s selection as the head of the new independent Garda authority.
Minister Fitzgerald says the outgoing Revenue Commissioners chief has a wealth of experience and is the right person for the job.
However, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties has criticised her appointment as not sufficiently independent.
Minister Fitzgerald has insisted that Ms Feehily was the best of a number of candidates.
"We had a range of candidates to consider," she said.
"We nominated the very best person to take forward the policing Authority, and of course it has to go to the justice Committee and be agreed by both the Dáil and the Senate.
"So there will be a lot of opportunity there for discussion on this."
