Minister asked to extend FoI Act to energy sector

The Communications Minister has been asked to consider extending the Freedom of Information Act to apply to monopolies in the energy sector.

Pat Rabbitte says the request came from the Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin.

Irish Water will already be subject to the provisions of the Act - but it could soon be extended to ESB Networks and EirGrid.

Minister Rabbitte says he believes it should be extended to more energy bodies.

"He has asked me to look at whether in the case of State monopolies whether the Freedom of Information Act ought to be extended to them, and I take the view that it should," said Minister Rabbitte.
