Minister accuses local councils of 'Nimby' politics in fight against homelessness

Environment Minister Alan Kelly has accused local authorities of Nimbyism around the issue of homelessness.

Minister Kelly has said that Dublin City Council has identified more than 200 houses for purchase or leasing to help ease the homeless crisis in the city.

He said that some of his proposals have been rejected by local authorities who are engaging in 'Not In My Back Yard' - or 'Nimby' politics.

"If I have to say - one area where I'd like better cooperation, it's from local authority members," he said.

"I've put proposals (to) Dublin City Council, they've been rejected.

"I think local authority's members need to step up to the mark.

"They've decisions to make when proposals are put forward - that there isn't Nimbyism as regards homelessness."
