Milk quota ends for farmers

Farmers will not be limited by EU milk quotas today for the first time in 31 years.

The system was aimed to prevent over production across Europe and will now allow Ireland to better compete to supply growing markets in Asia and Africa.

More than €600m has been invested to boost production from today onwards.

Parties were held across the country last night to mark the historic event.
