Migration company reports 25% fall in US visa applications

A company which assists in visa applications reports a 25% drop in people looking to move to the US.

Visa First said the strict application process is putting some people off even trying, with many instead applying for Canadian visas.

The company said that the US remains a popular choice among construction workers and those in the hospitality sector.

However, applications from people working as engineers fell over 60% in the year to the end of August, and nursing registrations fell by 67%.

“America is still a destination of choice for many Irish workers, it’s just that people aren’t aware of the various options open to them," Edwina Shanahan, a migration expert with the company.

"Our database shows that currently the majority of Irish people applying to work in the States are between the ages of 24-29 years."

She also said that people with a sublime in the US should consider applying for a "sibling visa", which takes several years to process.

"Even though you may not have any intention of going to America just yet, there is no harm in having the option to relocate to the USA," she said.
