Micheál Martin condemns threats to crime reporters

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin said today that any threat made to journalists is an attack on us all.

The comments come after two crime reporters at Independent Newspapers received threats to their lives from criminal gangs.

The CEO of Independent News and Media Stephen Rae has confirmed that security has been put in place to protect the journalists.

Speaking in Buncrana, Deputy Martin said this sinister development highlights the need to recruit more Gardaí.

"I hope and trust that the Gardaí have the necessary resources to apprehend those responsible for these threats, and indeed obviously for the appalling murders last week," he said.

"I trust An Garda Síochána. I've spoken to many gardaí and they've made it clear to me over the last while the need for greater strength on the ground and greater resources."
