Garland bailed ahead of extradition case

Sean Garland

A former Workers Party leader wanted in the US in relation to a massive dollar counterfeiting operation was today granted bail ahead of his extradition hearing.

Sean Garland, who previously skipped bail in the North, was told his family home was at risk if he tried to abscond again from Ireland.

In the High Court in Dublin, Judge John McMenamin ordered the 74-year-old to surrender the title deeds to his house in Brownstown, Ratoath, Co Meath, where he has lived with his wife and daughter for 20 years.

The veteran republican, a former leader of the Official IRA, who is being treated for cancer, a heart condition and diabetes, was also told to hand in his passport and sign on every day at his local Garda station.

“If Mr Garland absconds he will put the title deeds of his family home in grave peril,” said Judge McMenamin.
