Ireland not on course to meet EU emissions targets

The Environmental Protection Agency is warning that Ireland is facing a major challenge in meeting EU targets on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In a report out today, the agency says the Government should be able to live up to its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol through the purchase of so-called carbon credits.

The EU, however, has set more ambitious targets to reduce emissions by 20% over the next 12 years.

The EPA says Ireland will not meet this target unless stringent new measures are introduced to cut emissions, particularly in the agriculture and transport sectors.
