People seeking alcohol treatment up 21% in recent years

The number of people seeking treatment for alcohol abuse increased by 21% between 2004 and 2006, according to new figures from the Health Research Board.

The board says more than 16,000 people aged between 15 and 64 were treated between 2004 and 2006.

One-fifth of those reported that they had also used other drugs, mainly cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy.
