McGuinness hails 100 days of devolution deal
The historic agreement which saw the restoration of devolution in the North and and long term political enemies Sinn Féin and the Democratic Unionists working together in government is 100 days old today.
Marking the occasion, Deputy First Minister, Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness, said: “In those first 100 days I think we have already shown our determination to fulfil the pledges we made on that day.”
Addressing the biannual conference of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions across the border in Bundoran, Co Donegal, he said the aspiration was to create a society moving from division and disharmony to one which celebrated diversity and was determined to provide a better future for all its people.
He said he was working towards a society which cherished the elderly, the vulnerable, the young and all children equally – and which welcomed those from other lands and cultures.
Mr McGuinness said: “The progress we have made to date needs to continue and it will only do so through partnership.
“That partnership needs not just to be between political parties but also between all elements of our society.”
Trade unionists, he told the conference, had a major part to play. So to did employers and all those would help to build the infrastructure and the economy.
