12-year-old charged with shoplifting flat-screen TV
A girl, believed to be aged 12, who is charged with shoplifting a 32-inch television set, has been remanded on bail pending directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The girl and her 16-year-old sister are charged with theft of the 32-inch flat LCD television, valued at €1,000, from the Dixon’s outlet at the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, on March 9 last.
Judge Bryan Smyth heard at the Dublin Children’s Court today that the younger sister had also been arrested in Finglas on Tuesday for theft of cosmetics from a pharmacy. She was charged with theft and with violent behaviour in a garda station following her arrest.
The girl refused to give her name to the Garda, the court was told.
The court also heard that the girls’ mother was out of the country and they were being reared by an aunt.
Judge Smyth adjourned the case for four weeks the case pending directions from the DPP.
He also sought proof of identification from the younger girl who has given different dates of birth. In court when asked she said she was "13, 14" however when arrested earlier for the theft of the television she had said she was aged 12.
She has been ordered to obey a curfew to be in her home between 8pm to 6am as a condition of her bail and warned she could be remanded in custody if that was broken.
