UK department store John Lewis plans to open its first store outside Britain in Dublin, creating 800 jobs, the retailer announced today.

Trading over five levels, the 250,000 sq ft department store will anchor the proposed Dublin Central development on O’Connell Street, which is being developed by Chartered Land, and is expected to open in 2013.

The €50m investment is subject to planning permission.

The Dublin shop will be in addition to another new shop already proposed for Sprucefield near Lisburn.

John Lewis has an annual turnover of over £6bn (€7.4bn) and employs more than 69,000 staff.

The chain sells a range of products from home furnishings, furniture, fashion, audio visual equipment and home technology. A typical store carries more than 350,000 separate product lines.
