Govt under fire over medical cards

The decision taken in the Budget to means test over 70s for a medical card is continuing to cause considerable controversy.

The Government is coming in for some sharp criticism from the Opposition, and those within its own ranks.

It is understood that independent TD Finian McGrath has said he will withdraw his support from Government unless the decision is reversed, while several Fianna Fáil backbenchers have condemned the move, with Wicklow TD Joe Behan resigning in protest.

On Friday night the Taoiseach announced that he will seek to enter negotiations with the Irish Medical Organisation in an attempt to get as many older people as possible a medical card.
