Cowen defends co-location policy amid Dáil criticism

The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, has defended the Government's policy of allowing private hospitals to be built on the grounds of public hospitals across the country.

Speaking in the Dáil today, Labour leader Eamon Gilmore said the so-called co-location system would be paid for by taxpayers and would only serve to deepen the two-tier nature of the health service.

Mr Cowen, however, accused Mr Gilmore of being "blinded ideologically".

"If we're going to have an improved healthcare system in this country, we need to look at different types of models of delivery so that we can we get the outcomes out to the patients," he said.
