Value of compensation awards up 56% last year

The total amount of money paid out for compensation awards last year rose by 56%, according to the Personal Injuries Assessment Board.

Figures show that the board made 8,200 payments totalling €181m.

The board says it delivered savings of €40m by keeping compensation claims out of the courts.

The average case was settled in just under seven months, compared to three years for cases that went through the courts system.
