Cardinal 'prepared to go to prison' to protect files
07/02/2008 - 07:33:43Cardinal Desmond Connell is prepared to go to prison rather than hand over certain documents relating to child abuse, according to the Irish Catholic newspaper.
Cardinal Connell is currently taking legal action to prevent some files from being released to the government-appointed commission investigating clerical abuse in the Dublin archdiocese.
He claims the documents are legally privileged.
Reports in the Irish Catholic newspaper say the Cardinal has told friends he is prepared to go to prison rather than breach the confidentiality of the files.
The newspaper says Cardinal Connell is determined to protect confidentiality agreements he entered into with victims and some priests.
