An Irish MEP has criticised the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union, claiming the EU is not a force for peace on the world stage.
Last night, the EU was officially declared this year’s winner of the prize at a ceremony in Oslo attended by about 20 European leaders.
But speaking in Strasbourg, Socialist MEP Paul Murphy pointed out that the EU is home to a major arms manufacturing sector, and to many countries engaged in occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He said the fact that the EU won the prize is nothing but a “sick joke”.
