Update 8.35am:

The injured man is now in a stable condition in hospital.

Earlier:

A man is critically ill in hospital after he was shot by a garda in Limerick. The man, in his 30s, was shot in the face.

Members of the Regional Support Unit based in Cork had been tracking the movements of a car travelling into Limerick. There were two men in that car.

When it stopped and during the following operation, a shot was discharged. One man was wounded in the face and taken to hospital. The other man has been arrested.

The injured man, who is from Eastern Europe, was transferred to hospital.

The incident happened at about 2.30am today in Shanagolden near Foynes. It is thought the gun may have been discharged accidentally.

The incident was referred by the Gardaí to Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) under section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005, which provides for independent investigation of "any matter that appears to indicate that the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person".

GSOC investigators are at the scene near Foynes.

It is understood there were a number of gardaí in the area at the time of the shooting.

AA Roadwatch is reporting that the Shanagolden/ Newcastle West Rd (R521) is closed at Jobbers Cross due to 'an incident'.
