Mechanical fault suspected as plane makes emergency landing

It is suspected that a mechanical fault was to blame as a transatlantic plane was forced into an emergency landing in Shannon Airport today.

The American Airlines Boeing 767 en route from Manchester to Chicago diverted to Shannon Airport shortly after 1pm.

The airline said it made the landing as a precaution.

“A maintenance team is evaluating the aircraft and it is scheduled to re-depart at 3.35pm local time,” a spokesman for the airline said.

There were 199 passengers and 12 crew on board.

A spokesman for Shannon Airport said the aircraft landed safely.

Passengers were taken off the plane to allow for the mechanical check.
