McGuinness demands accountability over penalty points failure
The Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee has said serious questions must be asked about the penalty points system.
Yesterday's report by the Comptroller and Auditor General found that weaknesses in the Fixed Charge Notice System mean a fifth of drivers avoid fines and that half of all penalty points summonses were not served.
Fianna Fáil's John McGuinness chairs the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee and said that summer's penalty points controversy could remerge in the coming weeks.
"The Commissioner will be before us in relation to this report and the whistleblower I understand is bringing forward further documentation to prove his point," he said.
"This is all systems failure but within that somebody has to take charge...and nobody seems to be taking charged they are all nameless individuals and it is only the accounting officer and the Minister that can answer theses questions
"But I think that somebody has to step up to the plate and admit that somebody was wrong."
