McGuiness resists call to step down from PAC for banking inquiry

Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee John McGuinness says he has no intention of stepping aside from the role during an examination of Ireland's banking collapse.

His comments come after Minister Pat Rabbitte has suggested that Deputy McGuiness would not be the right person to head a probe as he was a member of the Fianna Fáil Government which was in power and oversaw the bank guarantee in 2008.

Deputy McGuinness has branded Minister Rabbitte's comments as "pure politics" and he accused him trying to provoke a "fake debate" which will ultimately distract from the committee's work.

"It is in their remit to do this inquiry and that they had spent the last six months putting together this very fine report shows how it can be done," he said.

"I didn't raise this issue, it has been raised by a Government Minister and has been followed on by a second Government Minister, and I think that it is, if you like, a 'fake debate'.

"It is simply distracting from the very good work of the committee."
