McDowell appeals to media to provide more details of accidents

18/07/2006 - 18:00:24
The Minister for Justice has appealed to the media to make public the circumstances of the accidents on our roads.

Michael McDowell said this afternoon that the general public were mostly left in the dark about how crashes happen, and what the factors lead up to them.

He said the media have a role in educating the public.

“If the public aren't given the facts they're not really in a position to draw any conclusions as to where some of the underlying problems lie," he said.

“I think it's very unfair to somebody like Gay Byrne for people to call on him to resign in circumstances where the full facts and the full background to a lot of these accidents aren't being brought to public attention.

“The media could help by educating public opinion as to the type of accidents that are happening."
