McDonald accuses Conlon of 'stonewalling' PAC

Sinn Féin's Mary Lou McDonald has accused former CRC boss Brian Conlon of attempting to stonewall the Public Accounts Committee.

Deputy McDonald said Mr Conlon had tried to frustrate the committee's efforts to get to the bottom of the controversy over salary top-ups at the clinic.

Yesterday it emerged that €742,000 was was taken from a CRC charity fund to pay for the pension of former chief executive Paul Kiely, after which the CRC board agreed the terms of the settlement would remain confidential and a legally binding agreement was put in place.

The HSE has said it may now look for the help of the Gardaí in investigating the matter. It will also attempt to recover some of the money.

If a complaint is made to the Gardaí, Commissioner Martin Callinan will appoint a senior officer to examine the file and report back on whether it warrants a criminal investigation

Paul Kiely is also to be called back before the committee.

Writing in today's Irish Indepent Mary Lou MC Donald, who is a member of the PAC, described ithe saga as "a tale of two CEOs - one who misled a Dáil Committee and one who attempted to stonewall and frustrate efforts to get to the bottom of the scandal.
