Maternity leave extension sought by EU

The EU has proposed that women should have a minimum of 18 weeks of maternity leave instead of the current 14-week leave.

The EU has also recommended that women should receive at least the same amount as that paid while they are on sick leave.

Currently, women in Ireland are entitled to 26 weeks of maternity leave on benefit and a further 16 weeks of unpaid leave.
