There was a record low turnout in the by-election for the Westminster seat vacated by Gerry Adams in Belfast - just over 37.5% of constituents voted.

Sinn Féin easily held on to the seat in West Belfast, with Paul Maskey topping the poll by more than 13,000 votes in what most viewed as a foregone conclusion. He received a total of 16,211 votes, just over 70% of the vote.

Gerry Adams said: "Paul doesn’t need my advice…He will be a wonderful MP for the people of West Belfast."
