Mary Lou McDonald ordered to take off ‘Yes’ badge in the Dáil

Sinn Féin TD Mary Lou McDonald has been ordered to take off a badge which advocates a ‘Yes’ vote in the referendum marriage equality.

Mary Lou McDonald was wearing the badge in the Dáil chamber earlier today during Ministers' Question Time.

However, she was later asked by an usher to take it off because of Dáil rules which ban members from wearing any political emblems.

Leinster House staff have reportedly been told to make sure the rules on badges are enforced in the run-up to the referendum next week.

The development comes days after junior minister Aodhan Ó Riordáin was asked to remove his own pin in the middle of RTÉ’s Saturday Night Show.
