Martin 'unhappy' with bishops' response to Murphy report

02/12/2009 - 01:50:08
The Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin is to write to the bishops named in the Dublin Diocesan report into child abuse to tell them he is not happy with some of their responses to the inquiry.

Among them will be Bishop of Limerick Donal Murray, whose lack of action on abuse claims was described in the report as "inexcusable".

Dr Martin said he is not satisfied with some of the bishops' responses so far, saying they owe the people of Dublin answers and cannot just tailor their response to their current diocese.

He said he hoped for the bishops to clarify their positions and respond appropriately.

Dr Martin also agreed there was a need for strong leadership within the Church.

Meanwhile the Taoiseach has defended the Vatican's dealings with the Dublin Commission, saying that the Holy see had acted in good faith

The Minister for Foreign Affairs has also been urged to meet the Papal Nuncio amid calls by Opposition parties to establish why the Vatican refused to supply information to the Commission of Investigation into the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin.
