Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has this evening recommended to his party that former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern be expelled from the party.
Mr Martin released a statement following a meeting with the officer board of Fianna Fáil, saying that the report of the Tribunal is "extremely serious" for all who care about public life in Ireland.
A special meeting of the Fianna Fáil National Executive is being called next Friday, March 30, at which a number of specific proposals will be tabled to ensure swift and decisive action by the party in a number of areas.
Included in these proposals will be the recommendation that Bertie Ahern and Padraig Flynn are expelled from Fianna Fáil, as well as three County Councillors.
Mr Martin said it is "a matter of profound personal and professional regret" to see in the report "the extent to which Bertie Ahern fell short of the standard of personal behaviour which is expected of the holders of high office".
