Martin: Some allowances 'belong to a different era'

The Taoiseach has come under fire over the government's decision to axe just one of more than a thousand allowances paid to public servants.

The Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has accused the government of a U-turn on its promise to reform allowances.

Mr Kenny said he will convene a meeting of public sector unions and management to maximise savings from the Croke Park deal.

Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin had hoped to save at least €150m a year from the plan, but may now only achieve €3.5m.

The Fianna Fáil leader said Mr Howlin's department has not lived up to expectations.

Micheál Martin said: "It is an extraordinary outcome from a new, up-and-coming department that was meant to really cut through relics of the past.

"Let's be honest, some of these allowances are relics, they belong to a different era."

See below the reviews of a selection of the allowances in question.
