Martin believes TDs should not get involved in criminal proceedings

The Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin has said that he believes Oireachtas members should not involve themselves in court proceedings.

Martin learned earlier that his party's Justice Spokesperson Niall Collins had written an open letter in support of a widowed father of four convicted of drugs offences.

In a statement, the deputy says he fully understands and respects the absolute independence of any sentencing judge, to suggest anything otherwise is a source of genuine regret.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny disagreed calling it was a "direct intervention" in the administration of justice.

This evening Michael Martin stressed while he holds the basic principal that Oireachtas members should not involve themselves in criminal proceedings he believes this case involves 'exceptional circumstances'.
