Marriage equality campaigns launched as polling day draws closer

Campaigning in the marriage equality referendum is heating up, as a number of groups launch new appeals to voters today.

With just five weeks until polling day, Yes Equality, Sinn Féin, and Mothers and Fathers Matter are all launching new initiatives this morning.

Sinn Féin will be campaigning in Gerry Adams' home of Louth.

A new campaign calling for a no vote in the same sex marriage referendum will be launched by Mothers and Fathers Matter.

They said a yes vote in the sex marriage referendum will remove the right of every child born in the country to have a mother and father.

Spokesperson Eileen King says the relationship between a man a woman is different to that of a gay couple, and she said civil partnership is more appropriate for same sex couples than marriage.

"[Civil partnerships] provide great legislative rights for same-sex couples, in a way that I think better describes and defines the relationship that two men or two women have with each other," she said.

"I think we're being asked to say there's no difference between two men in a relationship or two women in a relationship, and a man and a woman in marriage.

"And I think that's simply not true."

Yes campaign launches first billboard

In Dublin, the Yes Equality campaign is unveiling its first billboard advert in this morning.

The group, which is calling for a yes vote in the upcoming same-sex marriage referendum says the billboard will feature words including Loving, Equal, and Inclusive.

Supporters of the campaign will attend the launch dressed in bright colours to represent a rainbow.

"The words on the billboard describe Ireland [and] the journey Irish people have been on towards greater acceptance of their lesbian and gay family members and friends," said Yes Equality spokesperson Grainne Healy.

"The backbone of our campaign is supporting engagement in conversations all across the country. We hope the billboard prompts people to talk about marriage equality."

She also called the hacking of the Youth Defence website yesterday a "despicable" and "disrespectful" act.

The Christian pro-life group's homepage was yesterday replaced by a photo of the pro same-sex marriage mural on Dublin's George's Street.

"That's not something that the campaign would either support or in any way find useful."

Sinn Féin launches campaign in Adams' constituency

Sinn Féin are also launching their yes campaign for the upcoming referendums in Co Louth today.

The party is calling for people to vote yes when the question of Same Sex Marriage and lowering the age of Presidential candidates is put to the electorate next month.

The party's president Gerry Adams will be canvassing on the issues in Dundalk.
