Update 10pm: Gardaí say a man's body has been recovered following a search operation in the River Lee in Cork this evening.

It is believed that he was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Gardaí say the incident is not thought to be suspicious and is being treated as a personal tragedy.

Update 8pm: A car has been recovered from the River Lee at Kennedy Quay.

No details have been released yet and it is unknown whether anyone was in the car.

Earlier: A search operation has been launched after a car was reportedly spotted entering the River Lee at Kennedy Quay in Cork city.

The call was made at approximately 4.25pm.

Gardaí are at the scene and a helicopter search is in operation.
