A man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was shot in the face outside a creche in the Donaghmede area of Dublin.
The shooting happened as he was dropping his child off just after 9am.
The victim, a man in his 30s, was dropping his child off at the Little Monsters creche in Donaghmede when a lone gunman approached him. He was shot in the face before his attacker fled the scene.
Special correspondent with the Irish Independent Paul Williams said the victim of today's shooting has links to the Real IRA.
He believes the man survived a previous shooting after being ejected from the group last year.
"A week later, he was lured to a meeting near Saggart in Co Dublin," he said.
"He was shot in the legs and was found in a field afterwards. Of course, he didn’t know who shot him, or who had been involved."
The creche is located in the heart of a built-up residential area called Holywell Avenue.
The man was taken to Beaumont Hospital where his condition is described as "serious".
A large area outside the creche has been sealed off and a forensics team arrived a short time ago.
