Thirty-two-year old Declan Smith, who had dissident republican links and was wanted over a double murder, was shot in the head outside the Little Rainbows creche on Holywell Avenue.

He is believed to have had connections to murdered Real IRA boss Alan Ryan.

Smith was taken to Beaumont hospital after the shooting, where he died from his injuries overnight.

A post mortem examination by the State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy is expected to take place later today.

The Garda investigation into the incident is ongoing.
