15/04/2005 - 07:27:24
Gardaí were investigating today after a man was shot dead in a “gangland-style” killing in Dublin’s north inner city.

The victim, who was in his 20s, was shot as he sat in a car outside Croke Villas flats on Sackville Avenue in Ballybough at around 10pm last night.

It was the third violent shooting in the capital in the last two weeks.

It was understood that at least one man approached the victim and shot him several times in the head. The attacker is then believed to have made off on a motorcycle.

Officers confirmed that a motorbike and a car, which had been set on fire, were located near the scene.

A garda spokeswoman said: “Whether they are the ones involved or not we are not sure, but they have been preserved for technical examination.”

Emergency services were alerted and the man was rushed to the Mater Hospital but he later died.

The scene of the shooting was sealed off for technical examination by the garda forensic team.

The state pathologists office was informed for a post-mortem to take place.

Gardai also issued an appeal for witnesses if anyone saw anything suspicious around the Croke Villas last night.

In the other violent shootings Joseph Rafferty, 29, was shot twice by a lone gunman as he left his apartment in the Ongar Park housing estate near Clonsilla at around 9.15am on Tuesday last.

A martial arts champion, Jimmy Curran, 42, was also shot as he drank in the Green Lizard pub on Francis Street in the south inner city on Sunday week last.
