Man remanded in custody after being charged with threatening to kill his wife
A man has been remanded in custody after appearing on assault charges before a special sitting of Cavan District Court this evening.
Pearse McAuley, aged 50, was accused of assault causing harm to Pauline Tully McAuley after she was found with serious stab wounds to the upper body three days ago.
He was also charged with allegedly threatening to kill three people, including his wife on Christmas Eve.
Mr McAuley with an address at Canal Bank Walk, Castleforde, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan was charged with assault causing harm to his wife Pauline Tully McAuley - a former Sinn Féin Councillor for Cavan - at Kilderry, Kilnaleck, on December 24, 2014.
Judge Cormac Dunne also charged him with threatening to kill her and two other people at the same place and on the same date.
Mr McAuley was granted legal aid after the court heard he has been unemployed since October.
He will appear at Harristown District Court in Roscommon on January 2, 2015.
Much is being made of Mr McAuley's previous criminal record as he is reported to be well known in Republican circles and has served time in prison in the South for a serious crime carried out in the 90s.
If found guilty, his past would most likely be taken into consideration by a judge when deciding on any possible sentence.
