Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Loughrea, Co Galway today.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Loughrea, Co Galway today.

At approximately 12.45pm, a man aged in 40s was seriously injured when the car he was driving collided with a wall on the R446 at Moyleen near Loughrea.

He was taken by ambulance to Portiuncula Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A nine-year-old boy travelling in the car at the time was also taken to hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Forensic collision investigators have carried out an examination of the scene and the road has since reopened to traffic.
