Man detained on firearms offences

A man in his mid-30s is being held by gardaí in Dublin on firearms offences.

He was detained on the North Circular Road in the city at 10.20am this morning, close to the entrance of Mountjoy Prison.

It understood the man, who was driving a waste disposal truck, produced a weapon during a routine security check at the gates of the jail when he was asked if he was carrying anything he shouldn't be.

Gardaí say the firearm was not produced in a threatening manner.

The man is now being questioned at Mountjoy Garda Station under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
