Man charged with possession of ammunition at out-of-hours sitting of Special Criminal Court

A Limerick man has been brought before an out-of-hours sitting of the Special Criminal Court tonight charged with the possession of over 700 rounds of ammunition.

John Costello, 59, of Glenashrone, Abbeyfeale, Co Limerick, was arrested in Abbeyfeale today by a Limerick Garda.

Mr Costello is charged with the possession of 450 rounds of .38 special calibre ammunition and 329 rounds of 9mm calibre ammunition at Main Street, Abbeyfeale on February 21.

He is also charged with the possession of three rounds of 9mm calibre ammunition at his home address on February 22.

Detective Garda Michael Herlihy told solicitor for the DPP Mr Liam Mulholland that he formally arrested the accused John Costello at Abbeyfeale in Limerick today.

Detective Garda Herlihy said he introduced himself to Mr Costello and explained the reasons for his arrest in ordinary language and cautioned him.

Detective Garda Herlihy said he informed Mr Costello that he would be brought before the next sitting of the Special Criminal Court to be charged with the offences he had been arrested for.

Detective Garda Herlihy said Mr Costello made no reply and he then brought him to Newcastlewest Garda Station in Limerick where he introduced him to the member in charge.

The court heard that Detective Garda Herlihy then transported Mr Costello to the Special Criminal Court where he was given a copy of the charge sheet which was then explained to him.

Mr Costello, who appeared before the court wearing a purple jumper stood as requested when the court registrar read the charge to him.

Counsel for Mr Costello, Mr Dean Kelly BL agreed with Mr Mulholland that the matter be listed for mention and possibly a bail order application next Tuesday March 1 at 11am.

Presiding judge Mr Justice Paul Butler, sitting with Judge Flann Brennan and Judge William Hamill, remanded Mr Costello in custody until Tuesday morning.
