Man arrested in connection with attempted theft of ATM

19/01/2010 - 12:36:12
A 44-year-old man was today arrested by police investigating the theft of cash machines in the North.

He was detained in the Derrylin area, Co Fermanagh, on suspicion of attempted theft and criminal damage near Dungannon, Co Tyrone, on June 29, 2009.

Thieves have used mechanical diggers to rip ATMs from walls across the North. There have been 13 stolen in the past year.

The spate of ATM thefts has led operators to offer a £25,000 (€28,569) reward for information about those responsible.

Last month it was announced less money was to be stored in machines deemed vulnerable to attacks.

Dispensers targeted have invariably been in quiet rural locations.
