Man arrested after Tánaiste's car egged

A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage of Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore's ministerial car, a Garda spokesman said this afternoon.
It occurred before 11am at The Base, a community centre in Blackditch Road, in Ballyfermot, west Dublin.
The Tánaiste was forced to abandon an event to promote the children’s referendum today after his car was attacked by protesters.
“The decision was taken not to return on safety grounds, mindful that there were children in the building,” his spokeswoman added.
Seventy children were in the community centre venue for the Unicef launch.
Mr Gilmore was with Children’s Minister Frances Fitzgerald and had been due to launch the charity’s support for the children’s referendum campaign.
A spokeswoman for the Children’s Minster said a number of the youngsters have been invited to join the ministers to launch the Unicef campaign in central Dublin later today.
“It’s just a pity it could not go ahead out in Ballyfermot,” she said.
Éirígí Dublin City Councillor Louise Minihan – who was convicted of throwing red paint over former health minister Mary Harney two years ago – was among the protesters.
She was jailed for seven days following her refusal to pay a €1,500 fine.
The demonstration was staged following reports that the Government plans to cut children’s allowance payments in the upcoming Budget.
The protests were led by members of the left-wing republican group Éirígí and People Before Profit.
