Gardaí are investigating an aggravated burglary which occurred at a house near Tara, Co Meath shortly after 11pm last night.

Gardaí are investigating an aggravated burglary which occurred at a house near Tara, Co Meath shortly after 11pm last night.

Four armed and masked men forced their way into a house which was occupied by an adult female and a three-year-old girl.

The raiders were armed with what is believed to be a small handgun, a knife and an axe.

They proceeded to ransack the house and took a number of legally held firearms, ammunition and assorted personal property.

They also took the owner's car, which was later found abandoned near the M50.

Neither occupants of the house were injured.

In a follow-up operation, Gardaí searched a number of properties in the Rathmines area of Dublin.

At approximately 1am this morning, a number of firearms were recovered together other assorted property.

A black BMW car was also recovered which was the subject of a hijacking incident in Dublin city centre on Tuesday, May 6.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at Terenure Garda Station under the provisions of Section 30 Offences against the State Act 1939.
