A man and woman have been hospitalised in Offaly after a gunman opened fire at their home.

A man and woman have been hospitalised in Offaly after a gunman opened fire at their home.

The couple were attacked on the steps of their house by a lone assailant at around 7pm yesterday evening.

A man in his 30s was returning to his home in Tullamore County Offaly with his seven-year-old son and as he made his was way to his front door a lone gunman pulled up alongside in a car and opened fire.

The man was hit during the attack along with his partner who came to answer the door.

The gunman fled the scene in a vehicle which was later found burned out four miles away in Durrow.

The man and woman were taken to the the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore, but their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
