Two bodies have been found in a canal in Dublin.

An investigation is under way after two bodies were discovered in Ashtown in west Dublin this afternoon.

The bodies, believed to be that of a father and child, were found in a small amount of water in a stream linked to the Royal Canal behind the Ashington housing estate.

The discovery was made by a member of the public around 3pm.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, and the 3-year-old boy were taken from the water and the area has been have sealed off.

The state pathologist is due to attend the scene shortly.
